Frequently Asked Questions

What does a franchise consultant do?

A franchise consultant helps you understand franchising, evaluate opportunities, and make an informed decision before you invest. That includes reviewing the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), comparing brands, assessing territories, and planning your launch. At The Franchise Academy, that advice is independent — I’m not paid by franchisors to steer you toward a particular brand — and it starts with a free 30-minute discovery call. Read more about what an independent franchise consultant does, and how that differs from a broker paid by the franchisor.

How much does it cost to buy a franchise?

Total investment varies widely by brand and market. It typically includes the initial franchise fee, build-out and equipment, opening inventory, and working capital. Item 7 of the FDD provides an estimated range — but it’s the franchisor’s estimate, and the real number is often higher. Part of my work with buyers is pressure-testing Item 7 line by line so the budget you plan around is the real one.

Should I use a franchise broker or an independent consultant?

Brokers are usually paid by the franchisor when you buy, which can bias recommendations toward participating brands. A consultant is hired directly by the client, compares a wider range of opportunities, and advises based on fit rather than commission. Shawn Saraga is one of North America’s top franchise experts who can work for you: buyers hire him to evaluate a purchase, and franchisors hire him to build and grow their systems. I’ve also sat on the franchisor’s side of the table, so I know how brands sell — and where the pressure points are.

What is an FDD?

The Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) is the legal document franchisors must provide to prospective buyers. Its 23 items cover the franchisor’s history, fees, obligations, territory, financial performance representations, and the franchise agreement terms. FDD review is the core of my process — Items 7 (costs), 19 (financial performance claims), and 20 (outlet openings and closings) are where buyers most often get surprised.

How do I choose the right franchise?

Start with your budget, your skills, and the role you want in the business. Then research several brands, validate with existing franchisees, review the FDD, confirm territory availability, and secure the right location and lease before signing. It’s the exact process I teach in my course, How to Choose the Right Franchise For You, and in my book, The Franchise Toolbox — and the same process I take buyers through one-on-one, including site selection and lease review, where I’ve negotiated 800+ leases. For the full process, see how to choose the right franchise in eight steps.
